Top Posts of 2011

Here are your five favorite posts of the year, based on number of unique visitors. As always, I have not included the Supernatural link roundups because of their inherent draw to readers and because they just don’t have a huge archival value.

Final Thoughts on Season 6 of Supernatural
In this post, Katie shares her reactions to a shaky season of Supernatural. Based on how the show treated the brothers and the fans over the year, she decided not to make Supernatural appointment viewing anymore. A lot of you shared your thoughts on the matter, and we both loved the discussion.

The CW’s Secret Circle: How Does It Compare to the Books
Julie Harpin visited us to share her thoughts on The Secret Circle soon after its premiere. I enjoyed her post a lot because she compared the books (which I haven’t read) to the show as it had aired so far. Do you find that her predictions of what would stay and what would go remained true as the season progressed?

Is ‘Grimm’ the ‘Supernatural’ Killer?
In this post, I share my thoughts on the new show Grimm. I stand behind my initial review: that it is more enjoyable on a weekly basis than a bad episode of Supernatural. And, since we never know when Supernatural will be bad, Grimm is often the show Mr. PCC and I watch live.

Ten Reasons The Vampire Diaries Is Better than True Blood
Katie and I got together to create this list. I stand behind it, even though I still love True Blood. Maybe one of these days we’ll do a debate post where we go over the relative merits of both shows.

Why HBO Leads the Emmy Nomination Field
In this post, I go off on a tangent about my view of Hollywood economics. I firmly believe that the network model is dying and, in the future, the relationship will be between production studios and consumers of the shows—no middleman needed.

What did we learn from this list? Genre television is definitely our stock in trade here at Pop Culture Curmudgeon, and we both like to complain about what is wrong with the pop culture landscape.

Are your favorites on the list? We’d also like to know what you would like to see more of in 2012. Let us know in the comments.

Supernatural: Fallen Idols

Supernatural: Paris Hilton Is a Homicidal Maniac
Buddy TV’s recaps always have great titles. Personally, I think it might be true, we just haven’t found out about it yet. I mean, what does she feed her pack of chihuahuas?

TV Review: Supernatural Fallen Idols
Sahar shares his thoughts on last week’s episode at Blog Critics. Short version: Adding Paris Hilton did not ruin the show.

TV Recap: Not a Lot of Loving It Going on Here
M.R. Reed shares some background on Supernatural fan-dom, our feelings about the treatment the show gets from The CW, and some Twitter silliness before launching into his review of last week’s episode. He defends Paris Hilton’s performance against even the show insiders themselves. A very thought-provoking post. I’m not going to say that I loved Paris, but I may feel less ire when I watch the episode again in repeats or on DVD.

5.05 Fallen Idol
Supernatural Wiki gathers all of the pop culture references from last week’s episode. This is a very cool feature. I typically get 90% of the pop culture references, but I love getting confirmation of the ones I got and finding out the ones I didn’t.

Jensen Ackles: DaKine Dude
Jensen Ackles is a stand-up guy who is willing to take photos with fans in the airport. And apparently wears a DaKine cap. (Mr. Pop Culture Curmudgeon, who is from Hawaii, would be so excited–if he cared what clothing and accessories celebs wear.)

Jared Padalecki: I Believe the Children Are Our Future
Like many of us, when J.Paddz travels, he uses luggage to carry his clothing and other belongings. I love silly celeb news.

The Vampire Diaries up 100% with Women 18-34
Really? They increased their viewership from last year when they weren’t on TV? Seriously, I know what they are saying, but it seems like a less than clear way of saying it. The SPN gem here is that girls watch Supernatural, too.

Fun Stuff

I’m Erica, and I’m an Addict … That Is, a Romance Writer
Urban fantasy author and Supernatural fan Erica Hayes introduces herself on the group blog The Romantic Journey. She is a Sam girl, and she is hoping to gather more Sam girls in the comments to tak a stand against we rampant Dean girls.

The Fall Season So Far

So far, I think the new fall TV season has gotten off to a good start. There have been some misses (Accidentally on Purpose, to name one really big one), but I’ve been impressed with a few of the new and returning shows.

The Vampire Diaries is fun, though it is a DVR show. Flash Forward is awesome, interesting, and thought-provoking. And Glee. Wonderful, fun Glee. It should go without saying that I am completely and hopelessly in love with this season of Supernatural, but I’m saying it anyway.

I’m embarassed to admit it, but Cougar Town is actually pretty funny. I still think the word “cougar” is one of the most offensive current terms to refer to a woman, but Courtney Cox is very likeable and the show itself isn’t offensive.

The jury is still out on Dollhouse. It is improving, but I’m not sure the underlying premise is that strong. Case of the week doesn’t require glorified whores who can ‘t remember they are whores.

The CW made a good decision to cancel The Beautiful Life, but the back 9 order for Melrose Place? Really?

My Mondays and Thursdays are manageable. Tuesday is a nightmare. And Wednesday offers nothing at 8, but a glut of shows in the 9:00 hour. (Okay, maybe not a glut, but the only things worth watching mid-week are all on opposite each other.)

How about you. How is your fall shaping up so far?

Preview of Supernatural Episode 5.3 “Free to Be You and Me”

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

The new fall TV season is a time of hope and excitement. We’ve seen the ads and the previews of the new shows and the season premieres of our returning favorites, and we expect them all to be good. We haven’t yet been disappointed by any that fail to live up to their  hype.

This week, the CW will let us know what or who drunk Annie hit on 90210, how Sidney can be back on the new Melrose Place (didn’t she die? will she have pulled the same fake death trick as her older sister Kimberly?), if the TV world can handle yet another vampire adaptation, and, yes, what the eff Sam and Dean will do to stop Lucifer.

And Fox will show us whether the second episode of Glee can bring the joy that the pilot brought us back in May.

The rest of the premieres are spread over the course of the month. The non-CW shows I’m looking forward to are How I Met Your Mother, Community, and Flash Forward. And, God help me, the previews for Cougar Town have made it look engaging and funny. Even with that awful, sexist title.

Zap2it has a nice calendar listing all of the season premieres, in case you don’t know when your faves are coming on. Which shows do you think will make the grade? Which won’t? Can we start a pool for which show will be cancelled first?

Thursdays Will Be Super Stacked This Fall

Yet again, the networks, in their bizarre desire to dominate the lucrative Thursday night ad slots, have stacked all of their highest rated shows there.

In the 8:00 hour, I will have to choose to between Community, Flash Forward, and the Vampire Diaries. Yes, I have a DVR, but not in my living room, where I actually watch most of my TV. Vampire Diaries premieres first, so I’ll give that one a shot. Then, I’ll make my decisions about Flash Forward and Community. I really like Joel McHale, so I will definitely be recording Community for later viewing. Flash Forward looks intriguing, but I’ll have to see if before I know if it’s must-see TV. Survivor is not a factor.

The 9:00 hour is much easier for me. Supernatural live. The Office when SPN is a repeat. No worries.

And 10:00 is not an issue. I’ll be getting the dogs and then myself ready for bed.

How about you? Read the full story in Variety, then let me know what your Thursday nights look like.

Supernatural Blog Carnival, Aug. 14

Welcome to the August 14 edition of the Visions of Winchesters blog carnival. It’s summertime, so I’m keeping it loose in here. The posts are just kind of jumbled rather than grouped into categories. But, as always, spoilers are in a separate page.

Alice Jester discusses the information (and lack thereof) revealed at Comic-Con last month in “Hot Brothers Night.” This post at Blog Critics.org also previews The Vampire Diaries.

The CW released a promo video. Some say its spoiler-y, but I didn’t think so. If they play it on TV during the episode, it can’t reveal too much.

Buddy TV has two fun pieces from their Comic-Con coverage. First up is an interview with Jim Beaver. Next is a collection of videos from the panel at Comic-Con.

For those of you who think it is a travesty that neither Jared nor Jensen were able to go to Comic-Con, here are some videos of the boys at previous conferences:

Want to know which Supernatural character you are? If so, then take the quiz here. (BTW, I took it, and I am Dean.)

Finally, prepare for the new season by re-reading the awesome recaps at Television Without Pity. Begin the countdown to Sept. 10 now.
