All-American Boy Beats Brit Heartthrob

People magazine has named Chace Crawford the hottest bachelor. Yes, even hotter than Robert Pattinson.

I support their decision wholeheartedly. As I have mentioned before, Chace was my mental image of Edward Cullen, and I would have loved to see him star in Twilight. I think Edward’s creepy stalker tendencies would have been less distressing to me if they had been delivered by Chace.

Finally, an Adult Is Cast as a Volturi

Michael Sheen has joined the cast of New Moon as Aro, the leader of the Volturi, the mysterious Italian leaders of the vampires. I have been supremely unhappy with the choices of child actors for most of these leaders because as good as they may be, they simply do not have the gravitas I believe is needed to inhabit these characters.

Who is Michael Sheen? You may remember him as Lucian from the Underworld movies. Or as the father of Kate Beckinsale’s daughter, if you follow the British tabs. Or as journalist David Frost from the Oscar-nominated Frost/Nixon. He is an actor who has the chops to make Aro an interesting character. I can’t wait to see what he does with it.

Do You Still Like Vampires?

A literary agent posted a poll on his blog asking whether the vampire genre is over. Responses were 40% for over and 60% for still kicking. As a writer who is working on a vampire novel, I am happy to see that my love of vampires is shared by other writers.

But how do I feel about vampires when I’m wearing my consumer-of-pop-culture hat? I love them. I have loved vampires since I first watched Cliffhangers: The Curse of Dracula with my mom when I was 6. I watched Love at First Bite, The Lost Boys, and myriad other vampire-themed films as I grew up.

Near Dark was a revelation, as it was the first movie I saw that made me actually root for the vampires. (This was not the intention, but it was how the characters all worked for me.) Interview with the Vampire(the book, not the movie) was a bible for my newfound desire for he vamprie to be the hero, not the villain.

Twilight, though not a masterpiece of writing craft, was a wonderful story that created a new mythology for vampires. I’m not sure I buy all of it (sparkling? really?), but I enjoyed the concept.

I suffered through a bit of vampire overload in December, when it seemed everything was vampire–even the third installment in the Librarian series of movies was about vampires. I thought about abandoning my novel because I just wasn’t in love with it anymore. So I took a break.

How about you? Are you over vampires? Or do you continue to love them no matter how many different mythos and characters are thrown at you?

Please Stop Talking about Robert Pattinson's Odor

I think Robert Pattinson is a fine actor, even though I’ve made no secret of my desire for a different actor to play Edward. I don’t care how often he bathes. I think I will scream if I hear or read one more thing about how stinky he is.

Twilight DVD

Well, I was one of 3 million people who went out and bought the DVD of Twilight on Saturday. That puts it in the top 5 for first-day DVD sales of the last two years (this is so specific that its as if I’m giving a sports statistic), with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, The Dark Night, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Transformers.

I enjoyed it, more than the book, in fact. The teen angst in a visual medium is boiled into a few longing looks, rather than page after page of inanity. The sparkling was a bit much, although they did a better job of it than I thought they would. I still think Robert Pattinson is too British to be Edward, but he did a fine job as an actor. I am a fan of Kristen Stewart, and she did not disappoint. The vampires were somewhat odd, as no one except R.Patts appeared to have their own haircolor. Kellan Lutz’ Eddie Munster dye job was particularly disturbing. The highlight for me was Billy Burke’s Charlie Swan. He was pitch perfect as the awkward but protective father.

What did you think?

Dakota Fanning Will Play Jane in New Moon

Sources have finally confirmed that Dakota Fanning will play Jane in the adaptation of New Moon. It’s funny, I like their choices in women much more than their choices in men for these little Twilight films. Okay, really it’s just Edward. I think Edward is a controlling jerk who forces Bella to marry him and to convert to his “religion” at an extremely young age by withholding sex. But I also think he is physically an impeccable specimen of all-American boy–Robert Pattinson just doesn’t fit my mental image in any way, shape, or form.

If you’re interested in another story about withholding sex to get what you want, read The Rules. No seriously, check out Lysistrata. It’s a classic play about women withholding sex to get their men to end the war.

Newsy Tidbits

Here are a few of the interesting news stories of the past few days.

No one watches the Golden Globes
The Golden Globes brought in the smallest audience in years, down nearly 6 million viewers from the telecast two years ago.

Vanessa Hudgens as Leah Clearwater?
Vanessa Hudgens reportedly auditioned for the role of Leah Clearwater in New Moon, the sequel to Twilight. In related news, Taylor Lautner is only 4 pounds away from his promised weight gain to keep his role as Jacob in the next installment of the ridiculously successful vampire-werewolf tale.

Other sources, though, say this is a rumor and nothing more.

Actor’s Strike History?
SAG leaders appeared earlier this week to be ready to table a strike authorization vote. But, the hardliners seem to have won out, so the strike might still be on.

The Dogs Are No Longer No. 1
Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino took the number one spot at the box office last weekend, followed by Bride Wars (ugh!) and The Unborn. Will the dogs return to the top this weekend, with the release of Hotel for Dogs? Or will our friend Jensen Ackles rocket to the top of the box office with My Bloody Valentine 3D?

Twilight Sequel Will Need New Director

Catherine Hardwicke has left the Twilight sequel, saying she just can’t commit to the release time line. Summit Entertainment has not announced her replacement. What does this staffing change mean for the franchise?

My guess is that the next film will have a higher budget, allowing more, shall we say, believable special effects. The change is directors will also lend a different sensibility to the next installment. I think we will be in for a less indie feel next time around. And, as the more sweeping storylines of the later books are envisioned on film, perhaps this is a good choice for the story.

What do you think? Will the next film look and feel the same? Will it be as good with different folks in control?

Kristen Stewart to Play Joan Jett in Movie about The Runaways

I have now been reduced to squeeing fangirl.

When I was in high school, poppy heavy metal was huge. I was a huge fan of Motley Crue, Poison, Joan Jett, and Lita Ford. One day, while reading a profile of Lita (I believe it was in Metal Edge, but it may have been in Circus, I don’t know), I found that she had been in a band with Joan Jett in the 70s. The next time I went to the record store, I grabbed the only Runaways cassette I could find, Little Lost Girls. I was treated to some great songs, including the title track and covers of the Beatles Eight Days a Week and Quiet Riot’s Mama Weer all Crazee Now. Later, I found a live Runaways CD which survived the post-cassette world we live in and continues to be in rotation on my iPod (mostly it’s Cherry Bomb, but occasionally some of the deeper tracks, too).

So, imagine the joy I felt when I was surfing through Google News and found this story: ‘Twilight’ Star Kristen Stewart’s Casting As Joan Jett Raises The Question: Who Were The Runaways?

Not only will a new generation of girls be introduced to the archetype girl punk band, I will have a chance to learn more about the Runaways.

If only movies were quicker to make. I’ve got a while to wait before I see this one.
