I Couldn’t Read Flash Forward

I tried and I tried to read Flash Forward.

I really enjoyed the show until ABC ruined any momentum it had by sticking on that awful legal drama for three months. I had a hard time getting back into it because I had forgotten a lot of what was going on up to that point. So I thought, Why not read the book? It will be better than the show anyway; books always are.

In this case, though, the show was much more fun. The book’s first two chapters were bogged down with a whole bunch of science jargon and explanation that kept me from developing any interest in the characters and the events. And this is why I often don’t enjoy science fiction written by men: They spend so much time proving they know the science behind what they are writing that they wait way too long to prove they know their characters.

So, I decided to cut my losses and move on to something much more fun: The Darkest Passion by Gena Showalter. Check back in next week to read that review. And, take a minute to enter to win a copy of One Bloody Thing After Another by Joey Comeau.

The Deep End Was an Atrocious Waste of My Time

I made it through 17 minutes of The Deep End last night. And those 17 minutes were so painful.

I didn’t have high hopes for the quality of the content, but I thought the performance by a talented cast might make it all somewhat pleasant. I was wrong. Not even Clancy Brown could overcome that nightmare.

Anyway, it appears that for once the viewing public agreed with me. According to TV by the Numbers, The Deep End scored a solid 1.8 rating for adults 18-49, a full 14% below the lowest-rated episode of Flash Forward. Oddly, though, the ratings were pretty steady across the half hours, with very few viewers following my lead and turning that crap off.

The Fall Season So Far

So far, I think the new fall TV season has gotten off to a good start. There have been some misses (Accidentally on Purpose, to name one really big one), but I’ve been impressed with a few of the new and returning shows.

The Vampire Diaries is fun, though it is a DVR show. Flash Forward is awesome, interesting, and thought-provoking. And Glee. Wonderful, fun Glee. It should go without saying that I am completely and hopelessly in love with this season of Supernatural, but I’m saying it anyway.

I’m embarassed to admit it, but Cougar Town is actually pretty funny. I still think the word “cougar” is one of the most offensive current terms to refer to a woman, but Courtney Cox is very likeable and the show itself isn’t offensive.

The jury is still out on Dollhouse. It is improving, but I’m not sure the underlying premise is that strong. Case of the week doesn’t require glorified whores who can ‘t remember they are whores.

The CW made a good decision to cancel The Beautiful Life, but the back 9 order for Melrose Place? Really?

My Mondays and Thursdays are manageable. Tuesday is a nightmare. And Wednesday offers nothing at 8, but a glut of shows in the 9:00 hour. (Okay, maybe not a glut, but the only things worth watching mid-week are all on opposite each other.)

How about you. How is your fall shaping up so far?

Thursdays Will Be Super Stacked This Fall

Yet again, the networks, in their bizarre desire to dominate the lucrative Thursday night ad slots, have stacked all of their highest rated shows there.

In the 8:00 hour, I will have to choose to between Community, Flash Forward, and the Vampire Diaries. Yes, I have a DVR, but not in my living room, where I actually watch most of my TV. Vampire Diaries premieres first, so I’ll give that one a shot. Then, I’ll make my decisions about Flash Forward and Community. I really like Joel McHale, so I will definitely be recording Community for later viewing. Flash Forward looks intriguing, but I’ll have to see if before I know if it’s must-see TV. Survivor is not a factor.

The 9:00 hour is much easier for me. Supernatural live. The Office when SPN is a repeat. No worries.

And 10:00 is not an issue. I’ll be getting the dogs and then myself ready for bed.

How about you? Read the full story in Variety, then let me know what your Thursday nights look like.
