Can We Forgive Chris Brown?
With the court case resuming this week, Chris Brown and Rihanna have been in the news again. (Well, Rihanna really never left the news, but Chris Brown is back.)
I was thinking about celebrity crimes and forgiveness. I’ve forgiven a lot of celebs for their past mistakes–Robert Downey, Jr., for his drug use; Bill Clinton for his many unfortunate affairs; Madonna for the sex book.
But some mistakes are simply unforgivable. Violence against women is one of them. I find it hard to have any sympathy for Chris Brown, and I am completely shocked by the men who are speaking out on his behalf. We don’t really know what happened that night, but unless a girl is actually trying to kill you with a knife or gun, I find it really hard to believe that there is any possible justification for hitting her. There are so many ways to defuse a situation that don’t involve hitting someone.
Okay. I’m stepping off my soapbox now. Resume your pop culture consumption.
