True Blood – Checking in on Season Four

Well, what we’ve all been waiting for for three and a half seasons has finally happened. Did you like the way it was handled?

At about this same point in season three, I swore off TB forever. I was tired of all the rape and torture. The promise of more Alcide lured me back in. (Honestly, it’s a crime against nature for that man to have a shirt on. Just sayin’.)

I’ve been weighing the pros and cons of sticking with it again because I really don’t like/actively despise huge chunks of the show. I can’t stand Tommy or his whole story line. I miss the Jason Stackhouse of season 1 who was actually funny (please don’t take the Jessica thing any further, I beg of you, Alan Ball). I love Lafayette but can’t stand the whole Jesus plot. Bill is boring.

On the other side of my list (yes, I made a pros and cons list), there is Alcide, Eric and Pam. Right now those three are outweighing the cons, but I’m not sure how much longer it’s going to be that way. Honestly, I’d be happier if all they did was show that clip of Alcide stripping down over and over, or anyone of Eric’s nude/partially nude scenes.

I’m probably talking heresy here, but I’m actually finding this season kinda boring. You know what it is? I miss Dennis O’Hare’s Russell, the vampire king of Mississippi. He was such a fantastic villain. Fiona Shaw is hamming it up as Marnie, but it just hasn’t been as entertaining – although I think that’s more a problem with the writing than with her performance.

What do you think? How are you feeling about season four so far?

Bill and Sookie Are Totally Together in Real Life

How funny that Kristen Stewart and Mr. Floppy Hair himself Robert Pattinson keep getting bugged about being in a relationship when they aren’t, yet a much more fun vampire couple IMO has been a couple for like ever and no one knew. (Well, some people thought it was a possibility, but it certainly didn’t get the level of press speculation heaped on our friends from Twilight.)

Stephen Moyer, 37, and Anna Pacquin, 26, have confirmed their relationship to TV Guide. The age difference kind of bugs me (I can’t imagine being with a 26-year-old at this point in my life), but my feelings about it confirm that the whole Milo Ventimiglia-Hayden Panetierre thing would not have squicked me out anywhere near as much if Hayden had been in her 20s.

Because I love love, I wish my two favorite vampires from books made into movies/TV shows all the best. And I totally can’t wait for the next season of True Blood, even though I’m still in denial about the murder at the end of season 1. Oh wait, I loved True Blood season 1. Does that mean season 2 will suck?

Edited to add: In July 09, Moyer and Paquin announced that they are engaged. I still think the age difference is a little skeevy, but I wish them all the best. Read more about it here and here.

The Trouble with HBO Shows *Spoilers for True Blood*

In general, I am a fan of HBO series. They have tighter writing, they aren’t constrained by sponsor input or censoring, and they tend to get some of the best actors–those who wouldn’t think of doing network television are still drawn to HBO shows.

After watching the cliffhanger of True Blood last night, though, I was reminded of the worst part of getting hooked on an HBO series: the horribly long hiatus. We have to wait until summer 2009 to find out how the cliffhanger elements play out.

* Spoilers follow *

At least seven months to find out what is up with Mary Ann. Seven months to find out where Sam is going with all that money. Seven months to find out just how annoying a newly created vampire with a Christian chip on her shoulder can be. And seven months to find out whether my wonderful Lafayette is dead, knocked out, or turned into a vampire.

I think I will have to read the entire series of books by Charlaine Harris. I don’t know if I can stand to wait so long to find out what is up.

I'm a Winner

I was the lucky random winner in the True Blood Book Contest at BestFantasyStories.com. Yay!

Here’s my question for those of you who have read the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series, Dead Until Dark. Should I wait until this season of True Blood is over before I read the book?

Is Slim-Fast Enough?

I enjoyed last night’s premiere of True Blood, especially Anna Paquin’s performance. She inhabited her character so fully, that I completely forgot how much the blond hair bugged me in the promos. Some of the dialogue was a little corny, especially the dust-up over the vampire being named Bill and when Sookie said “since they came out of the coffin two years ago.” Other than Jay from Summerland and Larry (of this is my brother Darryl fame), I didn’t really recognize too many people. Mr. Curmudgeon however, was convinced he recognized every supporting actor.

My favorite line was when the bartender, in cautioning Sookie about going off with a bloodsucker, asked if she would be happy giving up her favorite food forever and living solely on Slim-Fast.

I will be interested to see if they develop the political aspects more as the show progresses. I thought I was watching the X-Men movies, with the call for vampire equality. Like the X-Men movies, this plotline exists as an obvious gay allegory. I wonder if people who are against gay equality see these parallels and whether they are put off by them.
