Is ‘Grimm’ the ‘Supernatural’ Killer?

I watched Grimm last week, and it appears that nearly 7 million of you joined me. It felt like an early episode of Supernatural, with the Grimms serving as that series’ hunters and the added tangle of the lead being part of law enforcement rather than on the opposite side of the law. It also had the gritty procedural feel that major network audiences seem to enjoy. If they keep that feel and strike the right balance between genre and mainstream, I think they could do quite well in the long term.

But, where does that leave Supernatural? Grimm is threatening to push it from live viewing to DVR in my household, which hasn’t been the case since seasons 2 and 3, when Mr. PCC (just PCC boyfriend at the time) and I saved them to watch together on the weekends.

Will genre fans jump ship to the seemingly more tightly focused Grimm? Will those people who already watch both Fringe and Supernatural have room to add Grimm to the mix, too? Do we SPN fans feel that our show is pretty safe on a CW schedule that appears to be wearing cement shoes?

Oddly enough, I haven’t watched Grimm or Once Upon a Time. I really just haven’t been that excited about any of the new shows this year. For that matter, I haven’t been excited about a lot of the returning show either. I’ve written Glee off completely, Supernatural has been relegated to the DVR, and Cougar Town and Bones are scheduled with late starts. I enjoyed Chuck but it wasn’t anywhere near the level of quality that that show can approach. (And good gravy, PUH-leeze find Morgan a stunt double that isn’t a foot taller than he is.)

I am liking both Grimm and Once Upon a Time. I viewed both with cautious optimism but wasn’t expecting to be wowed. In fact, I expected to spend most of Grimm looking for the recognizable Portland landmarks. Instead, I actually watched the show.

If I were forced to choose, I’d watch Grimm instead of Supernatural but luckily I can time shift so I won’t have to.
I like Grimm because of the fairy tales that hopefully will be the focus, and the absence of the angst, doom and gloom that pervades Supernatural. That and Silas Mitchell will be awesome without a doubt.
If I give up on Supernatural it will be strictly due to the quality of this season because they’re already on thin ice with me.

I don’t think Supernatural needs any help with it’s demise. The writers are doing that all on their own. I’m usually quite easy going and willing to give the show a chance after more than a few episodes but I don’t think they’ve learnt anything at all from last season. I wasn’t happy about them getting rid of Castiel (the small cast has always been this show’s biggest problem) but I figured they’d at least have a great exit and mine the emotional fallout but there’s been nary a mention. Unless it’s all leading somewhere big? I don’t have the faith in the writers to watch live and find out. 3 good episodes, 3 terrible ones. I’m definitely trying Grimm for a while.

It takes a lot to make me quit watching a show I love. I gave post-Mulder X-Files a good go, and I never quit either Friends or Gilmore Girls, even when it was obvious they were just limping along. Thus, it is highly likely that I will watch SPN until the end.

Quite frankly, nothing will make me give up on Jensen Ackles…and it’s not his looks, it’s his talent. It’s rare that I invest time in an actor. Not happy at all with Sera Gamble and her ‘campy’ ideas, or the fact she adds some girly soap in every episode. She is doing better this season, though, I’m entertained, and as long as Dean is runnin’ and gunnin’, I’m in. Both Jensen and Jared give 100% in every performance, and I appreciate that.

The lead actor from Grimm is bland. Or what SPN fan said.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this, Mia. Which is why I don’t think Supernatural has to worry about Grimm. What is missing from Grimm is a charismatic lead and a bond with friends / family that makes this lifestyle more complicated. There is a web of bad guys who know about each other, but no one that the hero (loosely used) has to turn to (yet) for help or support. They may be building up the Blutbad, who is actually more interesting thant he hero, but they need to do more.

You know, I have found in my fiction that writing a hero who is more interesting than the villain is hard. I have also found the Blutbad to be a much more compelling character so far. I am willing to stick the show out and see where things go.

I’ve seen both Grimm and Once upon a Time. I find them both better than Supernatural. As I also watch Fringe, it’s pretty much Fringe or Grimm on Friday nights.

I would keep on watching Supernatural except the fall-off in overall quality and the destruction of Castiel and most other supporting characters kill my interest. There’s no point in investing any emotions in anybody because they’re going to die anyway and I already dislike Sam. So pretty slim pickings.
