WTH, Netflix? Part 2

Just when my dander was starting to settle over Netflix’s big announcement about rate increases, I get this email from Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix. It starts out as an apology for lack of communication, yada yada, and then BAM! It turns into an announcement that Netflix is splitting into two different services, with two different websites and two different entries on my credit card. WHAT THE HELL?

Netflix will be the streaming only service, Qwikster.com will be the dvd service. They will function as two different entities and you’ll have separate queues with both, if you have both services. AND THEY WON’T LET YOU KNOW WHEN ONE BECOMES AVAILABLE IN THE OTHER QUEUE.

EPIC FAIL, REED HASTINGS.

Here’s a link to his blog entry “explaining things” in more detail, complete with a video entry.

You know, I’ve been debating about what I was going to do. I think this makes up my mind for me. We get a bunch of the movie channels already, I have my amazon prime and hulu plus memberships, I’m dropping the whole thing. This is ridonkulous.

Are you a Netflix subscriber? What do you plan to do at this point?

Yeah, I don’t really care about the separate charges/separate name, but the separate lists with no interaction between them is a non-starter. When I think about a movie I want to see, I check Netflix to see if I can view it right away and I instantly know whether I can start watching it right away or if I have to wait to get it in the mail. So if the movie isn’t out yet, will I have to “Save” it on both sites and then just wait to see which comes out first?

(Also, the naming is dumb. You’re NetfliX, so why not QuiXter?)

Yep, you’ll have to put it on both queues and check both places. How dumb and aggravating is that? I’ll admit that this blog post is a knee jerk reaction, but this whole thing just feels… unplanned and unthought out. Why didn’t they just make this announcement a few weeks ago when they made the rate change announcement? They had to know it was coming.

And, as for the name change/split, why would you mess with one of the most recognizable brands of the 21st century? To quote John Grisham, “You must be stupid, stupid, stupid.”

Yeah, lack of integration is the problem. I hate managing my queue, and for this to work, I will have to do much more of that. And pay more money. Thanks, Netflix.

We dropped Netflix a month or so ago. We’re still trying to decide about Amazon prime and I’m thinking about Hulu just so I can watch some Buffy episodes now that TB is over :)

I have amazon prime simply because I order from them all the time and it seemed like a good way to save on expedited shipping. The streaming videos are a nice side benefit. The nice thing about Hulu Plus is that they make entire seasons available of tv shows, as well as a catalog of movies that you can view without commercials. The downside is that it doesn’t have all of the shows currently airing or sometimes there is a month lag between when it airs and when it is available on Hulu.
