Supernatural: The Season So Far
I’m torn about this season of Supernatural, but I think my mixed feelings are all my fault.
I am enjoying the return to the simple hunting of monsters with an overarching, but not overwhelming, season-long arc. The monsters so far have been a nice return to season 2 SPN. I like that Dean will try to balance the hunting life with a family life.
However, the big questions are getting to me:
- Why is Sam back?
- Why is Grandpa back?
- Is what came back 100% Sammy?
- And, are they trying to put together a zoo of supernatural creatures?
I feel like maybe I’ve gotten so used to the huge stories of the Apocalypse that I’m not able to just enjoy these season 6 episodes for what they are.
I watched season 7 of Gilmore Girls, and I sometimes watch it in syndication. It was a shell of its former self without the guidance of creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. I quit watching X-Files after Mulder left, because it also was a shell of its glory. I have had the fear that season 6 of Supernatural would be as disappointing as these two television debacles. I watch each week with some anticipation but mostly the nagging feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Unless I can let this fear go, I’m not sure how well I will be able to enjoy these episodes. And they have been entertaining–the typical gore, monster education, and humor I have come to expect. But there is also something missing, and I’m not sure if it is the show or my expectations for it.
What are your thoughts on season 6 so far?

I’m not voting on your poll because I have felt all of those things at one time or another, lol. However, at this moment in time, I’m really pretty happy with Supernatural.
I feel like it’s a pretty good combination right now – more individualized MOTW stories but they’re acknowledging the averted apocalypse, too. I love the way they’re handling Lisa and Dean’s relationship. I’m curious as to what the creepy Campbells are up to and who they’re working for/with. I want to know what’s wrong with Sam – because something is definitely wrong. Oh, and I seriously doubt Grandpa Campbell (or at least whatever is pretending to be him) was in Heaven. I want to know why the monsters are suddenly amped up versions of themselves. In other words, I feel like the first few episodes have done a good job of setting up interesting storylines for the season without introducing such an overwhelming idea as the apocalypse.
The Apocalypse was just too big for season 5 – or maybe the didn’t pace it right. I can’t make up my mind. Or maybe it’s that it was kind of anticlimactic since we knew that it had already been renewed for Season 6. I was so disappointed by the way they handled the four horsemen (still think they should have used pony cars, lol) and the Antichrist.
But, in the end, I just love me some Winchesters. I’ll probably keep watching as long as it’s on the air unless something drastic happens.

I know. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to (or want to) quit the Winchesters.

I’m pleasantly surprised. It doesn’t feel like they’re retreading; I was wary of a season six, but I’m enjoying it very much. Thumbs up. Last night’s episode rocked the house. Bobby and Rufus rule. I’ll boil some water. What? HA!

Jensen did a great job directing.

I am enjoying this season so far, much more than season 5. I absolutely hated season 5, though, so it doesn’t take much for this one to be better in my eyes.
I will admit, though, I still don’t quite get the Dean/Lisa relationship. Seems forced by writers and not organic from the characters.

I can see why you feel that way. It was a bit of a surprise to me when Lisa was Dean’s dream girl in Dream a Little Dream of Me. I’m okay with it, though. It is interesting to see a hunter trying to have a normal family without raising the kid as a hunter.
