I love vampire stories - heck, the Anne Rice books were a huge part of my middle school and early high school experience (I flirted with goth for awhile there). I tried to read the books a couple of years ago when the Twilight books came out and I just could not get into them. For a long time I couldn't figure out why and then I realized - I really do not like Elena. At all. An interview I read with Kevin Williamson sort of address this issue - he says they were trying to make her more likable and relatable and less of a "mean girl." I think they may have succeeded with that for the tv show but I don't think it was enough of a change for me to make it must see tv. And, as an appreciator of fictional bad boys, I was always more interested in Damon than Stefan.
