The End of Reading Rainbow
Today was the last airing of Reading Rainbow, the 26-year veteran of the PBS lineup and the show that introduced LeVar Burton to many of us. The show was not renewed because PBS couldn’t secure the funding necessary to keep it going.
Read more about the cancellation here and about the hopes for an online show here. To stay up to date on what LeVar Burton is planning, follow him on Twitter or just search for the #ReadingRainbow hashtag.

That’s tragic – it’s not like their overhead could’ve been that high…

According to NPR, the price tag was “several hundred thousand dollars.” They also trace the end of Reading Rainbow to a shift in the U.S. Dept. of Education’s philosophy on reading education: Reading Rainbow taught a love of books, while the Dept. of Ed prefers to teach how to read.

That is so sad. I loved watching Reading Rainbow. I learned a lot from it!

It was a great show! I will be interested to see what else LeVar Burton and the Reading Rainbow crew do in the future to help kids learn to love books.
