Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist: The Adventures in Babysitting for a New Generation
I finally watched Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist over the weekend, and I thought it was fun. But it was like an updated version of Adventures in Babysitting, even down to such small details as the friend lost in a befuddled state at the bus station. Penelope Ann Miller’s rat friend was much more pleasing to watch than Ari Graynor’s gum and cell phone mishap, of course.
I loved Adventures in Babysitting–it catapulted Elisabeth Shue to teen stardom, and it was the first time I saw George Newbern of Father of the Bride fame, Anthony Rapp of Dazed and Confused and Rent fame, and Vincent D’Onofrio, who I will always think of as an Edgar suit.
What are your favorite movies from your teen years? And have you seen any similar movies made for today’s teens? (Remakes don’t count. But speaking of remakes, what planned remake are you least looking forward to?)

Hee hee, Edgar suit… Give me sugar!!
My favorite teen movies are actually from a little before my teen years but I claim them anyway. They are (and not necessarily in this order) Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Breakfast Club. Some Kind of Wonderful gets an honorable mention because the Duckie character finally gets the girl (or guy as the case may be). Yes, they were all made by the late, great John Hughes but can you think of any teen movies that have been made since that weren’t directly influenced by these?
I also love Dazed and Confused because it feels real. I know these people even if I don’t actually like all of them. (And it’s so much fun to see so many actors in their first role of any note!)
Scream was so much fun BECAUSE it made fun of itself and its genre. How many spin offs, spoofs and rip offs has it inspired?
Lastly, I’d like to mention Stand By Me. I’m not sure the kids in it were actually teenagers, but close enough. Amazing acting by the four leads, River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Jerry O’Connell and Corey Feldman – and I’ve never been able to look at blueberry pie the same way.

Pre-teen/teen. It’s all the same. Stand By Me was a great movie, and a great short story by the incomparable Stephen King.
Sixteen Candles is probably my favorite of the John Hughes movies.

I recently saw N&N too and noticed the bustop similarities between that and Babysitting. I still catch Babysitting every now and then on USA or wherever its airing and think it still holds up well. Gotta go with Ferris Bueller as my all time fave teen flick though. If you want to see a sometimes enjoyable recent Ferris clone, watch Charlie Bartlett.
