Remember When You Couldn't Take Cameras to Concerts?

I went to the Tori Amos show on Saturday, and it was awesome. She covered her catalog quite well and included a good representation of the new album. The only thing missing was the banter I remembered from previous shows. I have felt like she has become a little more distant over the years, adding layers of abstraction to her music and to the way she interacts with fans during the show.

I mean, when I saw her for the first time when she was supporting Boys for Pele, my group yelled, “We love you, Tori,” and she responded that she loved us, too. Last night, she never responded to any of the shouts of love, not even to “I f-ing love you!”

Anyway, what I really wanted to talk to you about is how weird it feels to bring cameras and cell phone cameras into concerts. They used to be so fascist about any method of recording shows, whether visually or aurally. But now, the second the lights go down, the cameras come out and the videos get recorded. In fact, here is a video of Tori singing “Tombigbee,” the last song of the show.

Read more about the concert at this review, which includes a setlist.

What shows have you seen so far this summer? Which concerts are you looking forward to?

I’m definitely looking forward to Placebo, Sunny Day Real Estate, Wynton Marsalis, and Alice in Chains (all within 2 weeks of each other in Sept).

I think my most looking forward is the lesser known Peter Mulvey in Eugene in November. He’s a groovy singer-songwriter that I miss. He used to tour through 2 times a year when I lived in SW Ohio. Now, I’m lucky once every other year. :(

Best so far this year (all in Portland): Tori Amos (same show as you), dredg (in April), Zappa Plays Zappa (in Jan), and Holy Fu?k (in June).

It is hard to keep up with a lot of artists here in Oregon. I always get jealous when I see how many shows Better Than Ezra plays back east.
