The Most Unnecessary Dog Product Ever

Does your dog have a little problem? Does he maybe get a little too friendly with your legs or furniture? Personally, I would recommend some training classes to better establish your leadership in your household. But, one company has come up with a novel solution: a sex doll for dogs.

Yes, a sex doll for dogs. Find out more about this travesty here.

Full Disclosure Is Key for Paid Posts

You have spoken. You believe that paid blog posts are just fine, as long as the relationship is disclosed.

Here are the full results.

What do you think about paid blog posts?

57% They are okay, but only if the financial relationship is fully disclosed.
29% They are okay by me. A blogger has to earn a living, after all.
14% They are evil, plain and simple.

The Very Best in Romance Novels

The Romance Writers of America conference was held last week, and they closed the event by honoring the best in published and unpublished romance novels with the RITA and Golden Heart Awards. Find out which authors won awards here.

In the past, a few of you have asked me why I read romance novels–and if I read anything else. I have a lot of reasons, but I did a guest post last week that covers one of the big reasons: the genre is a testament to feminist ideals and female empowerment.

Emmy Noms

In case you didn’t feel like getting up early (5:30 am Pacific? Really?) to watch the Primetime Emmy nominations announced this morning, here is a link to the nominations from the major categories.

I’m excited to see a few drops of new blood in there. (Way to go, Flight of the Conchords!) But still nothing for Friday Night Lights. I wouldn’t even dare to dream of anything for Supernatural.

The most interesting thing about these nominations is how many are for shows that are no longer on the air. Would a nomination for Kristen Chenowith last year have helped save Pushing Daisies? Did William Shatner really deserve another nomination for Boston Legal?

What do you think? Did the new rules lead to a better slate of nominees, or just a bigger one?

Paid Sponsorships–Good or Evil?

The Federal Trade Commission is looking at whether bloggers who are paid to review products should follow the same truth in advertising rules as other forms of paid content.

I have signed up for some of the services that match bloggers with sponsorships, but I’ve never done it. It feels weird to me. I’ve reviewed books that I have received for free as review copies, but none of those reviewers were sponsored by any author or publisher. And, I think those account for three of my reviews. All of the others have been books I purchased or checked out from the library.

People Do Watch TV in the Summer–Just Not on the Major Nets

Looks like the cable networks are winning the race for summertime TV viewers through high-quality scripted programming. According to USA Today, the major networks have seen double-digit drops from last year. Maybe crappy reality TV isn’t the best option, even though it is ridiculously cheap to produce.

Remember When You Couldn't Take Cameras to Concerts?

I went to the Tori Amos show on Saturday, and it was awesome. She covered her catalog quite well and included a good representation of the new album. The only thing missing was the banter I remembered from previous shows. I have felt like she has become a little more distant over the years, adding layers of abstraction to her music and to the way she interacts with fans during the show.

I mean, when I saw her for the first time when she was supporting Boys for Pele, my group yelled, “We love you, Tori,” and she responded that she loved us, too. Last night, she never responded to any of the shouts of love, not even to “I f-ing love you!”

Anyway, what I really wanted to talk to you about is how weird it feels to bring cameras and cell phone cameras into concerts. They used to be so fascist about any method of recording shows, whether visually or aurally. But now, the second the lights go down, the cameras come out and the videos get recorded. In fact, here is a video of Tori singing “Tombigbee,” the last song of the show.

Read more about the concert at this review, which includes a setlist.

What shows have you seen so far this summer? Which concerts are you looking forward to?
