When Did Motley Crue Become Classic Rock?
I start by offering my thanks to Bowling for Soup for coining the title to this post. They captured the quiet desperation of the suburban housewife so well in the song “1985.”
I’m old. The music I grew up with is now considered classic rock. I watched the top 100 one-hit wonders of the 80s on VH1 Classic over the weekend, and the most disturbing thing was the ad that ran enticing you to watch videos on the VH1 Classic website. I can accept Madonna’s Lucky Star as a classic video, but Smells Like Teen Spirit? Nirvana is classic rock now, too?
I really don’t mind getting older, for the most part. I dye my gray hair, and I use sunscreen and eye cream to stave off wrinkles. I don’t love the increasing aches and pains that plague me as I make my way through my 30s. But I enjoy the life experiences I have had that have made me wiser than I was when Madonna and Nirvana were top acts. I certainly have more self-confidence than I did when I was in my 20s. Sometimes, though, I listen to Lady Gaga or TI just to feel younger.
