Stand-up Comedy

[digg=http://digg.com/arts_culture/Stand_up_Comedy_3] The 80s were the golden age for stand-up comedy. HBO was constantly showing stand-up specials. And it seemed that the only thing you needed to get a sitcom was to be a stand-up comedian. Even Margaret Cho had a show. Then tastes changed, and stand-up seemed to be relegated to a special niche. Comedy Central shows a lot of stand-up, and a lot of it is quite good. But it’s isolated. It almost never occurs to me to watch stand-up because it doesn’t come on one of the channels I typically watch. I went to a Joel McHale show over the weekend, and it was hysterical. It made me miss good stand-up–I feel that way whenever I happen across one of Janeane Garofalo’s HBO specials, too. How can I reconnect with the comedy world in a way that works for me?

So, we adore The Soup and Joel McHale so for my hubby’s, Citizen Grant, birthday I got him tickets to see Joel McHale. I knew he wasn’t a “seasoned” stand-up so went in with no expectations but it was fantastic! Not sure if you and Mr. Curmudgeon have children but his stuff on being a parent was spot on and of course everything else was hilarious too. I highly recommend him to any of your readers!

No kids yet, but I’ve done enough babysitting in my day to recognize the truth in his stories about his kids. Did he talk about the little person at the In N Out Burger when you saw him? That slayed me.
