Can You Create an Internet Panic?

My author self got a cool idea to create a blog to chronicle a character’s search for her missing sister (the central mystery in the novel). I’m wondering if that would create any sort of stir. Would people freak out thinking that some girl was missing? Or would they get that it was fiction from the get-go?
