How Passe Are Beauty Pageants?
With the latest beauty pageant scandal, I am wondering what purpose these pageants really serve. Proponents of pageants claim they teach young women poise and grace. I’m not sure how they define poise and grace, but I don’t believe any reasonable definition involves a dine and dash. (Not sure what I’m talking about here? Those who decry beauty pageants claim they increase the objectification of women at a young age.
They do seem to be a good proving ground for women who want to get into the entertainment industry or public life, as past beauty pageant winners include Halle Berry, Laura Herring, Cloris Leachman, Eva Longoria, Jeri Ryan, Diane Sawyer, Vanessa Williams, Oprah Winfrey, and, of course, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
