Is it the end of the Sammy show?
After three plus years of focus on Sam’s grand destiny, last night’s episode gave we Dean girls some hope that Dean is actually “the one.”
The episode itself was good, although I was expecting a more light-hearted romp through Halloween lore. I enjoyed the humanizing of Castiel and the introduction of a real Old Testament hammer of god style angel in Uriel. I felt bad for little Sammy when the angels rebuffed his obvious hero worship. And Dean ripped my heart out when he saw Sammy using his powers. I was yelling at the screen for Sam to just hold possessed art teacher there and get the knife. I may be a Dean girl, but I don’t want Sam to go darkside.
The most fun moment was when I saw Josh from Kyle XY. Jean-Luc Bilodeau was the road kill guy at the two Halloween parties, you know, the one who got pulled into the crypt and apparently crushed. I’ve always had a soft spot for Jean-Luc because he reminds me of my young cousin. Casting directors, keep that in mind when you make the movie of my life. And Jason Biggs would be good for his older brother.

I find the term cougar so gross and offensive. Yet, I may have to embrace it, or at least learn to live with it, as one of my favorite comedic actresses is doing a pilot titled “Cougar Town.”
Courteney Cox, aka Monica from Friends and Carrie from The Opposite Sex and How to Live with Them, will star as a divorced 40-year-old with a 17-year-old son. Hijinks will ensue, and I hope the hilarity will not be completely demeaning to all women of a certain age. I will watch it, because I do like Courteney, but I will be willing to quit after an episode or two if it bugs.

In sad news, the juggernaut that was the Obama infomercial decimated Pushing Daisies. Only 6.64 million people escaped into our world, as opposed to the 26.42 who watched Obama. The good news is that this number is an increase from last week.

As the only scripted show on network television at 8:00 tonight, Pushing Daisies is in a good situation.
A lot of us are suffering from election fatigue. And we might be looking for a lush urban fairytale to take our minds off it all, at least for one hour.
Or we may never have heard of the cute little tale of the baker who briefly reanimates corpses to solve their murders. But we may stumble across it and watch it instead of the Obama-athon. And we may like it. We many talk to our friends about it. We might even come back next week to watch it again.
I recommend this course of action wholeheartedly. Record the Obama show and watch it at 9:00, when Private Practice is on. But watch Pushing Daisies at 8:00. It’s a very fun show, and it could sure use the viewers.

The ultimate winner of the writers strike is Chuck, hands down. (Well, I’m pretty sure the studios won quite a bit monetarily, with that 17-day window and all, but creatively speaking, Chuck has come back bigger and better than ever.)
Last night’s episode contained enough shout-outs to video game geeks over 30 to leave a poor girl breathless. And hubby was excited to hear the song from the Transformers movie. (”The Touch” by Stan Bush, for those of you who, like me, thought yourself above animated movies when the Transformers movie came out.)
When I was in college, I worked with two big Rush fans. They would shroom and listen to Rush in the projection booth of the local theater. They would take a week off work to see all Rush shows within driving distance. And then they would talk about the shows for the next three months. They were tools who left their cushy theater jobs to write video games. Thus, the use of “Tom Sawyer” to beat what is apparently a very hard video game had special meaning for me.
I did not hang out in arcades, so I never played Miss-Ile Command. My full-size arcade game experience is limited to brief flirtations with Spy Hunter and Arkanoid and a year-long love affair with Bubble Bobble. These dalliances all happened at the theater, while working with the Rush dudes. I have a copy of Bubble Bobble for the Playstation. I also had it on my cell phone a few phones ago. Bub and Bob are timeless, but the game just isn’t as fun if you can’t power up with fast movement, fast bubbles, and strong bubbles all the time. And, without the joy of bonuses for having the appropriate score at the end of each level, it just isn’t the same. If you know how to power up the PS1 version of the game on the PS2, please tell me. I will owe you big time!

I was the lucky random winner in the True Blood Book Contest at BestFantasyStories.com. Yay!
Here’s my question for those of you who have read the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series, Dead Until Dark. Should I wait until this season of True Blood is over before I read the book?

I finally figured out why I have misgivings about the actor cast as Edward in Twilight: he looks too British.
For me, that first book was such an American tale, and Robert Pattison just doesn’t have that wholesome, all-American look that I imagined for Edward.
I pictured him looking quite a bit more like Chace Crawford, so that is who I had hoped would be cast. I enjoy watching him on Gossip Girl, and I think he would have done well with the role of Edward.
I like all of the other casting decisions. I really like Kristen Stewart as Bella. She looks almost exactly like I had pictured Bella. And I think Kellen Lutz is perfect for Emmett. The other actors aren’t exactly what I pictured, but I think they are close enough, and they have the talent to change my perception of the characters.
I’m sure that Robert Pattison will be just fine. I’m just happy to have finally figured out my misgivings.

Even though I am the curmudgeon, and I can be filled with vitriol, I typically don’t like to wish evil on specific people (groups of people are fair game). But I do wish that certain people’s careers would end and they would leave the pop culture world to people I enjoy reading about.
Lindsay Lohan is one of those. I had hoped that this stint on Ugly Betty and her upcoming film Labor Pains would be the end. Unfortunately, according to IMDB, she appears to be attached to another movie in pre-production. But, I can dream that her behavior on the set of Ugly Betty and the horrible performance of her last movies at the box office will help the rest of the world see that she is simply no longer a bankable star whose ridiculousness is worth putting up with.
She has made enough money (unless she has horrible spending habits or horrible contracts) to retire comfortably with her DJ and leave us all in peace.

Metropolitan (and its companion pieces Barcelona and The Last Days of Disco) is one of my favorite movies. If you haven’t seen Whit Stillman’s first film, you can watch it free at Hulu: http://www.hulu.com/watch/30659/metropolitan
After that, you’ll have to get the other two from your local video store. Netflix has Barcelona, but they don’t appear to have The Last Days of Disco–horror! And look for sci-fi/comedy Little Green Men, due out in 2009.

With the latest beauty pageant scandal, I am wondering what purpose these pageants really serve. Proponents of pageants claim they teach young women poise and grace. I’m not sure how they define poise and grace, but I don’t believe any reasonable definition involves a dine and dash. (Not sure what I’m talking about here? Read about Miss Teen Louisiana Lindsey Evans’ run-in with the law and de-crowning: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hHIMp7jlMrKpUKakbxa57N_4h-vgD93VL7MG0.)
Those who decry beauty pageants claim they increase the objectification of women at a young age.
They do seem to be a good proving ground for women who want to get into the entertainment industry or public life, as past beauty pageant winners include Halle Berry, Laura Herring, Cloris Leachman, Eva Longoria, Jeri Ryan, Diane Sawyer, Vanessa Williams, Oprah Winfrey, and, of course, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
What do you think about pageants?
